In most cases that will depend on installation, audio modulation levels and a little bit of luck.Warning - low power broadcasting is highly addicting. I've been hooked since 1989!
I had to build my first transmitter from a schematic in a library book because there just weren't any affordable ready made units available. That transmitter only got out about 50 feet, but I was smitten :-)
Things are much easier today, with quality companies like Chez Radio offering all in one solutions like the Procaster.
You can also extend your range with the web :-)
I have the earphone jack from an old AM radio plugged into the sound card on an old 500 MHz PC running WinMedia Encoder serving as a global off air monitor.
